San Francisco Chronicle: Features Story on Savage X Fenty Pop-Up Shops
Pop superstar Rihanna knows how to put on a show, whether we’re talking about her sold-out concert tours or her over-the-top Fenty runways at fashion week. At this season’s Savage x Fenty fashion show in New York, Riri topped herself when pregnant model Slick Woods took to the runway in labor wearing barely there lingerie (she had the baby 14 hours later, in a hospital). Now, the same fall and holiday collections from the New York runway are available in-store at a four-month Savage x Fenty pop-up at Westfield Valley Fair Mall in Santa Clara, minus the amniotic fluid.
The Rihanna (born Robyn Rihanna Fenty) Savage x Fenty lingerie line is part of the singer’s dual lifestyle brand empire along with the incredibly popular Fenty Beauty. Along with her recording/touring schedule and acting, the Fenty lines appear to be part of the 30-year-old’s ongoing plan for world conquest (watch out, Gwyneth “Goop” Paltrow!) Photos from the opening over the weekend show a packed store, no surprise given the popularity of another recent Bay Area pop-up for Kylie Jenner cosmetics.
The pop-up space’s overall aesthetic is athletic, modern and sleek (like an arena stage on a Rihanna tour), but the collections are a burst of retro ’90s trash and flash (in a good way!) a la vintage Todd Oldham or the newly nostalgic looks on the Fran Drescher sitcom “The Nanny.” Acid tones, neon colors and animal prints mixed with neutrals and jewel tones are strong in the fall collection with pieces including oversize satin pajamas and knit bodysuits that the brand says can be worn “day or night” as outerwear. The line has also expanded its nude/neutral options to be inclusive of even more skin tones. The #iamsavage collection, much of it branded with the Savage x Fenty signature rose gold logo, includes lounge wear like leggings, tanks, tees and sweats. The new holiday collection includes denim (for lingerie, sleepwear and outerwear) mixed with lace and jungle-style embroidery. Sizes range from 32A-40DDD in bras, to XS-3X in bottoms and sleepwear.
